When we traveled to Lisboa and Évora with “Portugal in Love” for a week of venue visits, tastings, and adventures, we expected beauty, but what we didn’t expect was how this country would make us feel warm and wonderful in a way that stays with you long after you fly home. If you’re dreaming of a destination wedding that blends historic charm with modern hospitality, without the price tag of other popular European destinations. Portugal may surprise you the same way it surprised us. In this blog we show you some of our favorite venues, and experiences that we think you and your guests would love!

Where to Stay: Convento do Espinheiro

Our home for the week was Convento do Espinheiro, Historic Hotel & Spa – Évora, a former monastery turned luxury hotel. As soon as we walked in, we were amazed by the clean white architecture, the beautiful history in every corner, and the peaceful atmosphere of the grounds.

At the Évora, we got to partake in so many wonderful events such as the welcome cocktails, B2B meetings, the farewell lunch… and even a surprise in the hotel’s private church. The moment we stepped inside, the room filled with the sound of Gregorian Chant (Canto Gregoriano) performed live. It was such a lively surprise that left us feeling in awe of both the space and the performance.

Pro Wedding Planner Tip for Brides:

Wear comfortable shoes. Nearly all of Portugal has cobblestone streets, stone pathways, or pebble-set dirt roads. Beautiful yes, but your feet will thank you later.

The Event Spaces at Convento do Espinheiro – Évora

  • Indoor Ballroom: The white walls and ceiling make this venue the ultimate blank canvas for a bride to fully personalize her wedding vision.

  • Outdoor Lawn: Ideal for food stations, cocktail hour, or mingling under the open sky.

  • Historic courtyard: surrounded by columns, perfect for a ceremony or dinner with string lights

  • BONUS:

    • Bridal suite: canopy bed, dramatic draping, and a grand sitting room that feels straight out of a European portrait.

And the guest rooms? Ours was spacious with a patio, and two twin beds together instead of one kind bed is common in Europe. Couples often prefer it because each person gets their own blanket while still sharing a larger bed.

Lunch at Octant Évora

On our second day, we visited Octant Évora for lunch, a luxuriously designed property in the middle of nature. The walk to the lunch setup went through restaurants, pathways, guest rooms, the pool area, and finally a long vineyard path that opened up to our event space.

They created a cocktail-style lunch: standing, talking, grazing on barbecue, fresh jamón, and refreshing drinks.  It felt relaxed, intimate, and social, surrounded by wide open scenery far away from the hotel crowds.

Pro Wedding Planner Tip:

For midday events, always consider shade. Portugal can be warm, and a canopy or overhead covering makes a huge difference in guest comfort.

Gala Night at Fita Preta

If you want your guests to gasp when they arrive, this is the place.

Fita Preta is a grand castle with an incredible wow factor, the kind of venue that instantly becomes part of your guests’ core memories. We were greeted by two towering floral performers, whimsical and theatrical, plus a “ring for champagne” wall where a hidden hand passed out glasses from behind the flowers.

Cocktail hour took place in the courtyard with a fresh oyster-shucking station. But it was the three wine cellars transformed into themed dining rooms that truly stole the show:

  • The Red Room: Exotic red florals and deep velvet drapes, which made for a very dramatic and cinematic vibe.

  • The Black Room: A cross glowing softly in the back, floating taper candles, shadows and mystery. Unexpected, moody, and unforgettable.

  • The Green Room: Where I was seated there were chandeliers above, tropical florals, and black chairs and utensils, which made for a beautiful, fresh, modern, and sophisticated feel.

Every room felt like stepping into a different world.

What is there to do in Portugal?

Christmas Markets, Egg Tarts & Tuk Tuk Adventures

Since we arrived early, we wandered the city center onto cobblestones, saw tiled buildings, warm lights, and Christmas decorations strung across the streets. Portugal at Christmas feels like a postcard: Rossio Square turned into a festive Christmas market, Praça do Comércio shining by the waterfront, and the smell of hot wine filling the air.

We tried the famous Pastel de Nata at Manteigaria, and the flavor surprised me. Thinner, crispier crust. More cinnamon and custard than the egg tarts we’ve tasted elsewhere. And yes they were so good… we had multiple!

But my favorite activity? The Tuk Tuk Tour

We spent two plus hours riding through old Lisbon, climbing hills, visiting churches, passing stunning tiled façades, and stopping at viewpoints overlooking Alfama. Our guide even surprised us with more egg tarts from the best - Manteigaria!

Highly suggest going on a Tuk Tuk Tour, the price varies by the number of people and season. For our clients, we can make special arrangements with private Tuk Tuk Tours and can give you the best, most authentic experience.

If We Could Design the Perfect Portugal Wedding Weekend…

From my personal experience, here’s what I’d curate for a couple wanting a joyful, heartfelt, unforgettable celebration:

Welcome Gifts

  • Personalized Portuguese tiles

  • Locally made cork accessories (a Portuguese specialty)

Food & Drinks

  • Endless Pastel de Nata

  • Fresh Portuguese wine

  • Chicken, steak, pork, jamón

  • Wedding Planner Tip for Chinese-American Brides:  Be warned that when you order fish, the strong fishy flavor is often too overpowering for Chinese palates.

Guest Experience

  • A private Tuk Tuk tour through Lisbon

  • A surprise egg tart break at the hilltop view

  • A castle buyout for only $7k–$10k (!!)

  • A winery dinner under chandeliers

  • A ceremony in a historic courtyard or church

Portugal truly gives you the Italy/France atmosphere without the Italy/France cost.

If You’re Unsure About Portugal… Here’s What You Should Know
